CDC requests funds for rain-damaged roads

21 Mar 2017

Central District Council (CDC) has submitted a request of P343 016 908 from the parent ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to maintain and fix roads that were damaged by the recent torrential rains.

Speaking at a CDC full council meeting on Monday, chairperson, Mr Peter Williams said that the funds would be used mainly for asphalt overlay, drift and culvert construction and or maintenance, re-gravelling and spot improvement.

“In the meantime the council is partially attending to some of the defects such as pothole-patching and opening of side drains through its maintenance crews in order to alleviate the situation as well as improve traffic safety in our roads,” said Mr Willaims.

He informed the CDC meeting that the recent torrential rains caused damage to pavement layers of most roads and because of heavy traffic the roads had developed deep potholes.

He said there was need to resurface some of the roads with asphalt overlay to prolong their lifespan.

On other related matters, Mr Williams revealed that recent floods had affected villages of Gweta, Dzoroga and part of Nata and Mokoboxane.

However, the chairperson warned that floods were still ongoing.

Mr Williams informed his fellow councillors that disaster management team was on the ground helping the affected and assessing the extent of the damage.

He said that a request of P58 500 had been forwarded to the national disaster management office to assist the affected with feeding and other requisite supplies.

Notwithstanding the benefits associated with the rains, Mr Williams cautioned of possible outbreaks of waterborne diseases due to destroyed pit latrines and stagnant water. ENDS
