Heavy downpour stalls Sharps Peril game

20 Mar 2017

Debswana First Division South encounter between Sharps and Black Peril was, on March 18 called off  in the 38 th minute due to  heavy rainfall.

Before the game was cancelled,  Sharps were awarded a penalty in the 26th minute after Goitseone Kusane fouled Letlhogonolo Chengeta inside the box, and Moemedi Moatlhaping converted the spot kick to make it 1-0.

Just when supporters were looking forward for an open and entertaining game, heavy downpour disturbed the game, forcing the referees to call it off, after inspection of the pitch.

Peril coach, Nelson Olebile said the game was open for both teams, given that they both created chances but Sharps managed to convert theirs.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a relief for the game to be called off because the game is played in 90 minutes, but of course they were leading, but we can’t say rain has rescued us,” he said.

He said he was confident that his charges would unleash a major come back during the game, adding that they were also looking forward to the half time break to correct their mistakes so that at the end of the game they earned three valuable points.

Furthermore, Olebile said during the game he was a worried man, because his players did not fight for the ball with their opponents, adding that they gave Moatlhaping more room to easily receive the balls, and Langa Mabule was also unmarked in the wings.

“We were leaving a very big room for Sharps to attack us, more especially when they attacked on the wing play. I think we were not closing the wings properly.

Those were some of the mistakes I was going to address during break,” he said.

Sharps, assistant coach Davies Kopi said they had missed a lot of scoring opportunities during the game, adding that as a technical bench they were confident that had the game continued they would at the end emerged victorious after some correction, during half time.

He said they were determined to win the game at all cost, but rainfall decided to stand  on their way on the day.

“But what can we do. We don’t have control on weather, and the play rules are clear that if a game is stopped by rain it will be fixed for another date, so we will wait for the date,” he said.

Sharps are still perched at the summit of the log with 33 points out of 16 outings, and they have won nine games, drawn six and lost one.

On position two is Uniao Flamengo Santos with 31 while Mogoditshane Fighters are third on the log also with 31 points.

In other games played on Saturday, Skoon Boys and Prisons X1 played to a one-all draw in Charleshill.

In Modipane, Lesirane also managed to hold Modipane to a one-all draw.

Mogoditshane Fighters beat Mochudi Rovers 1-0 in a game that was played at Mochudi.

Games between Notwane and Letlapeng, Uniao Flamengo Santos versus Matebejane were also called off due to rainfall. ENDS
