14 Mar 2017

The Minister of Basic Education, Dr Unity Dow, has emphasised the importance of mathematics and science subjects towards global competition.

“Government is committed to making sure that each and every Motswana child in the country has access to education. We are working round the clock to educate every child even those in the remotest places,” she said during Morula English Medium Primary School silver jubilee celebrations .

Dr Dow went on to state that government was making efforts to ensure that children whose parents lost their jobs at BCL mine continued with their education as demonstrated by government’s commitment to pay their school fees.

The minister further commended schools in Selebi Phikwe for doing fairly good and producing good examination results.

She noted that schools such as Joseph Anderson Primary, Makhubu Junior Secondary School and Selebi Phikwe Senior Secondary were among the top that produced good results following last year’s examinations.

“The good pass rate recorded by schools in the mining town demonstrates that Selebi Phikwe is a town to reckon with when it comes to education. The success can be credited to hard work by teachers and head teachers,” she said.

She also said government was committed to revitalising the economy of the town after closure of BCL mine which was the main economic contributor in the region. She said a robust plan had been put in place and gave assurance that Selebi Phikwe would transform into a vibrant economy in the near future.

For his part Selebi Phikwe mayor Mr Amogelang Mojuta said as town leaders they appreciated government’s support and assistance offered to former BCL employees.

“Government is committed to assist parents and children during this time when the town was going through transition period by paying school fees for children. The government saw it fit to avail P5 million for school fees even though the funds were not budgeted for,” he added.

Morula Primary School board chairperson Mr Nigel Bellamy said the 25 years that the school celebrated marked a united and productive journey taken by parents and the school in provision of education to children in the mining town. He said the journey had been a success resulting in Morula school being a symbol of good education for many children and parents.

He acknowledged all those who contributed to the success of the school like parents, teachers and learners. ENDS
