Mahalapye Sub District roads in sorry state -Cebani

08 Mar 2017

Recent torrential rains in the country have left most roads around Mahalapye Sub District severely damaged, says Mahalapye Sub-council chairman Mr Tassman Cebani.
Speaking during the on-going Mahalapye Sub-council meeting, Mr Cebani said potholes have increased both in numbers and size making roads difficult to access.
However, he said Request For Quotations to engage private companies for patching them in Mahalapye, Chadibe and Sefhare were floating.
He explained that around Mahalapye Village filling of potholes by gravel was undertaken to temporarily address the situation on the A1 circle, Spar junction, and Railway junction and along the Madiba road.
He said drains have been silted for long and also vegetation has grown along roads obstructing sight distances and swift flow of water.
Mr Cebani said as a mitigation measure; ten temporary labourers have been engaged to assist in vegetation control, culvert cleaning and drain desilting.
He noted that construction of a drift at Boseja Ward has been completed while the other one was still ongoing, adding that to combat the intensity caused by soil erosion due to recent rains the council had outsourced the services of a grader to tackle the situation on major roads in Mahalapye.
He said the council still experienced shortage of machinery, therefore works such as dry grading of primary school playgrounds and spot improvement would be slow.
He said the council would in the near future implement minimal land servicing projects at Kalamare and Tumasera/Seleka which entailed bush clearing and water reticulation.
Mr Cebani said this would go a long way in aiding people to develop their plots because there has been an outcry from the public that they could not develop plots because there were no services.
Further, he said the sub-district had collaborated with the Department of Town and Regional planning in preparation of the Sefhare structure plan and currently at consultation stage through kgotla meeting.
To avail planned land for allocation to beneficiaries, he said a layout plan for Kalamare Village, Bopedi Ward had been prepared and approved by physical planning committee.
Mr Cebani said the layout covered an area of 1 10.45 hectors which had created 517 residential plots, six commercial plots and 11 industrial plots, adding that residential plots would be allocated in due course while other types of plots would be advertised by the land authority for every Motswana to try their luck.
Still on land use planning, he said the council would in the near future embark on extensive consultations for street naming of roads in all villages in the sub-district.
Mr Cebani said the main purpose of this exercise was to complement the land registration process so that after completion street names would be available for street addresses.
He pleaded with councillors to support this initiative and vail themselves during consultations. ENDS
