It appears the 2016/17 Debswana First Division North league championship is for Francistown talk of the town, Tafic or Matjimenyenga, as it is affectionately called by its legion of supporters, to lose.
Only a major football earthquake could send Tafic tumbling from the current pole position they currently find themselves in with 36 points from 16 outings, with only five games left to wrap up the much entertaining and competitive league.
A few months ago, it was a bit difficult to see clearly who it shall be, as Mahalapye side, BR Highlanders and Palapye outfit, Motlakase Power Dynamos appeared to be making life difficult for Tafic.
Not that Tafic is out of the woods yet, but their four points gap between them and second placed, Highlanders and five and six points gap between them and Sua Flamingoes and Motlakase respectively, makes the boys in red, the favorites to emerge victorious and automatically be promoted to the high paying, BTC Premiership.
This weekend, Matjimenyenga will be home in a Francistown derby against Tango Boys or Tasc as they are known at the old Francistown Stadium on Saturday.
This game will prove to be the difference between Tafic’s marching to the BTC Premiership and possible play-offs should they fail to grab the ultimate prize.
Tasc on the other hand are breathing heavily at the 11th spot, a precarious second from the bottom position, which could see the former Botswana Defence Force (BDF) backed side dropping to the Division 1 league, where a possible return is not a given.
Meanwhile, in other mouthwatering games billed for the weekend, bottom placed, FC Satmos with a paltry five points will continue to do the impossible, avoid relegation, when they play cross town rivals Real Movers, with 18 point and on position seven at the Nico United grounds.
In Pilikwe, Motlakase with 30 points will host Maun Tigers, which has 16 points and in eighth position, while fifth placed, Chobe United with 26 points will host Ecco City Greens on position six with 24 points. ENDS
