Popa roll over Sankoyo
06 Mar 2017
Township Rollers have maintained their position at the top of the BTC Premiership log after a convincing 3-0 victory over Sankoyo Bush Bucks at the National Stadium on March 2.
Lemponye Tshireletso scored twice adding to Kekaetswe Mara Moloi’s earlier goal, to hand the Blues a ninth consecutive league win; an impressive run stretching back to a 2-0 triumph over Extension Gunners last December.
Dragojlo ‘Drago’ Stanojlovic’s Ngurungu side looked inventive for periods of the game, but in truth, it was outplayed for most of the match. A fourth minute Segolame Boy free kick that went just over the Sankoyo bar was early indication of how the match would go.
Goal scorers combined in the ninth minute to give Rollers the lead. Tshireletso floated in a cross from the left wing met by a good Moloi header, making it 1-0 to the hosts.
In the 28th minute, Rollers towering defender Obuile Oscar Ncenga, missed a gilt edged chance to make it 2-0. Another Tshireletso cross had found the overlapping centre back unmarked with the Sankoyo net baying to be kissed by the pigskin, but his header first hit the ground then went agonisingly over the bar.
Sankoyo searched for an equaliser with Botshelo Mafoko hitting the side netting after cutting into the Rollers’ 18-yard box from the left wing.
It would be Popa who would rattle the net again in the 34th minute. Tshireletso rounded off a flowing move involving Ntesang Simanyana, Boy and Joel Mogorosi with a long-range effort from outside the box.
The two sides went into half time with Rollers leading 2-0 and emerged from the break with Drago having clearly told his charges to attack in order to reduce the margin and they attacked.
Oabile ‘Shumba’ Bathusi and Bobby Ntshegisang joined Mafoko in making forward forays into the Rollers half.
However, that just exposed Ngurungu to Popa counter attacks. Mogorosi, the captain on the night, played a long ball to Tshireletso who observed that the Sankoyo goal minder Kabelo Kuti was off his line. Tshireletso neatly tucked the ball into the Sankoyo net from range, making it 3-0 in the 54th minute.
As the game wore on, the two sides kept playing an open end-to-end attacking game, but with no further goals. Mogomotsi ‘Teenage’ Mpote’s side had done enough to emerge victorious.
In other results, BDF XI defeated Green Lovers 1-0, Security Systems won 2-0 victory over Nico United, Orapa United beat Gilport Lions 2-0 and Black Forest won 2-1 against Miscellaneous.
Gaborone United versus Mahalapye Hotspurs game was called off due to poor lighting on Friday night.ENDS
