Teachers houses not for sale-Dow
05 Mar 2017
Teachers are not entitled to buy school houses, Minister of Basic Education, Dr Unity Dow, has said.
Dr Dow said this when responding to a question in Parliament from Francistown East MP, Mr Buti Billy.
The purpose for government to build and buy houses for teachers, she said was for staff to access accommodation in areas of posting for the purpose of service delivery.
“As our rentals are generally set lower than pool houses, it provides teachers the opportunity to buy a house in a location where they may wish to retire, as opposed to where they are sent to work and this is an advantage rather than a disadvantage,” she added.
Mr Billy had asked Dr Dow if she was aware that teachers occupying school houses were disadvantaged as they could not purchase houses, unlike other public officers who occupied Botswana Housing Corporation houses.
The Francistown East legislator also wanted to know what the minister intended to do to assist the affected teachers. ENDS
