Rainfall helps Maun water situation

03 Mar 2017

Water levels at the Thamalakena River have greatly increased due to recent heavy rains, improving water supply in Maun.

Briefing the Maun Administrative Authority on March 1, Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) water works superintendent in Maun, Mr Dikgang Molaodi said Borolong and Wenela treatment plants were shut down February last year because the river had dried and the plants which relied on surface water were affected.

Borolong Plant is responsible for about 6000ml water supply per day while Wenela Plant contributes about 0.945ml per day.

Mr Molaodi said a significance increase was realised between January 30 and February 7.

However, Mr Molaodi said although levels had improved, water demand for Maun was still at a deficit at 0.779 milliliters per day.

The current supply, he said was 11.159ml per day while the demand was 11.938ml per day, a situation which needed to be addressed.

He noted that the Kunyere well field which provides 2.438ml of water per day had been experiencing breakdowns due to its location, therefore caused water shortage in some part of Maun.

However, he said the Kunyere situation was restored, resulting in an increased water supply in the village.

He said some of the parts affected were those with inadequate network coverage since all treatment plants were working and delivering the right quantities.

Meanwhile, WUC project manager, Mr Goyabokhutlong Dintwa said Phase II of the Maun water supply and sanitation upgrading was progressing well and procurement of sanitation and some water supply materials was complete and delivered at the sites.

He said although the water supply design was complete, WUC was yet to approve. ENDS
