Councillor decries vices poor performance

02 Mar 2017

Qangwa/Xaxa councillor, Mr Lelejwang Sokwe has expressed concern about bad behaviour, which he says leads to poor performance by students.

Addressing Form Four students at Shakawe Senior Secondary School recently, Cllr Sokwe said  students who are involved in the use of alcohol and drugs should stop as this was negatively affecting their learning.

Cllr Sokwe, who is also a chairperson for the Education and Health Committee in the Okavango Sub-council, also expressed fear towards the alarming school drop outs, which he said was due to different ill-acts.

He condemned frequent visits of police officers to Shakawe Senior School, noting that behaviour of such students like being caught on the acts of theft was not acceptable, therefore students should abide by the school rules.

Mr Sokwe said the involvement of students in social media was also worrying because they go online and post pictures during school hours. He said these attract men to them who at the end destroy their future.

He said the effort of the government in improving technology was meant to develop the country and its education not to instill bad behaviour.

He added that social media was meant for grown-ups and employed people.

Cllr Sokwe said the reason students study is to learn and get empowered with knowledge that will help them deposit thousands of Pula’s in their pockets in future.

He said for someone to devote their time and travel longer distances to talk to them shows how much they care about their future, therefore students need to acknowledge and act upon the messages brought before them.

He further urged students to work hard, abide by school rules and dream big.

“Be dedicated to improve your lives and the region because it is mostly affected by poverty,” he said.

He also urged teachers to reduce permissions granted, noting that the time spent outside the school was irreplaceable and that some students sought permission to bunk school.

For his part, Ngarange/Mogotlho councillor, Mr Setshwantsho Maira was also concern about the bad state of school premises in the region, adding that such contributed to poor performance. ENDS
