28 Feb 2017
Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Shaw Kgathi says Botswana Police Service (BPS) has investigated only one case of sedition since 2008 to date.
Minister Kgathi told Parliament on February 27 that BPS investigated and completed a case which falls under offences against the State’s Authority.
He said one person was charged and the case was pending before court and the trial date was yet to be determined.
Minister Kgathi further mentioned that prior to 2008, two cases falling under the category of offences against the State’s Authority were investigated and the accused persons were accordingly prosecuted and convicted.
MP for Selebi Phikwe West, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse had asked the minister to state the number of investigations of crime of treason and other offences against the State’s Authority such as mutiny and sedition since April 2008.
MP Keorapetse had also wanted to know how the investigations ended including whether or not suspects were charged, prosecuted and convicted.
He further wanted to know if such crimes were ever investigated before 2008. ENDS
