ABM University college has donated a house worth over P130 000 to Obonye family in Bombadi ward in Maun as sign of remembrance for the child the family lost in January this year.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, student services manager of the college, Ms Gloria Chebane said relations between the community and school are very important.
She indicated that as a school, they have a responsibility towards contributing positively within the community.
“We have bereavement guidelines that help us when we have lost someone who is part of our school environment,” she said. She said students have a role in the guidelines as they also suggest ways in which condolences can be done.
Ms Chebane further said the student health and welfare office at the school also takes care of such cases.
She urged the Obonye family to receive the gift with love as it was also conceived with love from ABM University College.
“The last time we were here it was a sad time for all of us but now we should revel in the Lord and be happy for such a gift,” she said.
For his part, Bombadi ward headman Mr George Bendu said the gesture by ABM University College is the first of its kind. “It shows that they will forever be connected to their students and that they care about them,” he said.
He further said ABM University College is an inspiration to other institutions and called them to emulate it. “Gestures like these make us what we are, which is a caring and loving nation,” said Mr Bendu.
He said the house was not built because the Obonye family did not have housing, but rather as a remembrance to the child that passed away.
“Some opt to put up tombstones but ABM University College built a house,” he concluded. The house was built with funds raised by the school. ENDS
