Latest areas affected by floods
26 Feb 2017
Moshawana and Bophirima wards in Mochudi are the latest areas to be affected by floods.
A press release from the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) says the 22 affected households have been assisted with various relief items, including food baskets and tents, while five have been relocated to temporary shelter at Phaphane Primary School.
The release says most of those affected by floods reside along the Notwane River bank, and as such the District Disaster Management Committee providing assistance and response has appealed to residents in the area to cooperate with their teams when asked to move to high ground.
“This, is due to instances whereby residents have declined the evacuation only to later request for assistance,” the release says.
Still in Kgatleng District, the release says Kgomodiatshaba and Dikgonnye villages were also affected by floods and the disaster committee is responding to the situation.
It further says in Kweneng District, 18 households in Molepolole/Lentsweletau and 20 in Letlhakeng Sub-district have been affected.
Meanwhile, it says the water level in the river has receded in Ramotswa and the situation has normalised as well in Taung area where the road is also open for use, while in Lobatse the situation has also stabilised and the Disaster Management Committee is monitoring the situation.
However, the public is advised not to attempt to cross the Nywaane Bridge even by foot, as the condition of the damaged bridge is unstable and very dangerous.
This, the release says, comes after some parents from Otse wanted to have their school going children cross the bridge on the way to school in Lobatse.
The public is also urged to remain vigilant during the ongoing rainfall being experienced around the country and also contact the district commissioner’s office, police, kgosi or any leadership in their areas should they require assistance due to possible flooding.
Further, the public is advised to continue listening to the radios and watch TV weather bulletins and spot announcements for the latest information and possible flooding in their areas.
The NDMO together with different stakeholders continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide regular updates. ENDS
