23 Feb 2017

Minister of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services, Mr Prince Maele is in Tete, Mozambique to attend the ZAMCOM Council of Ministers’ meeting that started yesterday.

A news release from the ministry states that the purpose of the meeting is to transact ZAMCOM business in accordance with the functions and powers of council as conferred by Article 8 of ZAMCOM Agreement, the Zambezi Water Commission (ZAMCOM) which amongst others, will consider the adoption of ZAMCOM procedures for the notification of planned measures in the form of Projects & Programmes.

“The ZAMCOM is a set-up of eight riparian states that share the Zambezi River Basin. They are; Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe,” the release states. The release further says that the states signed a ZAMCOM Agreement on July 13, 2004 which was aimed at promoting the equitable and reasonable utilisation of the water resources of the Zambezi Watercourse as well as its efficient management and sustainable development.

The Zambezi basin is a strategic resource for Botswana’s water.

“As a country that strives to draw from the basin, it is imperative that Botswana continues to engage with other riparian states, hence the minister’s visit to Mozambique,” states the release. He returns today. BOPA
