MJDS to establish police complaints commission
23 Feb 2017
Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Shaw Kgathi says his ministry would continue to explore the possibility of establishing an Independent Police Complaints Commission.
Minister Kgathi told Parliament on Wednesday that the establishment of the independent police complaints commission required both human and financial resources, which were currently unavailable. He however said he was pleased that the Botswana Police Service (BPS) has established an Internal Affairs Unit, whose responsibility is to investigate all cases relating to misconduct by its members.
He thus encouraged members of the public who are aggrieved by the actions of BPS members to report to the Ombudsman for redress.
Minister Kgathi was responding to a question from MP for Francistown South, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi, who had wanted to know when the Independent Police Complaints Commission would be established in Botswana.
