Adopt a Person organization (AAP) in conjunction with Malawian community leaving in Botswana, on Saturday donated food hampers and school uniform to underprivileged pupils at Mosamowakwena Primary School in Maisane.
Kgosi Kedirile Letshabo of Molapowabojang said at the event held under the theme; ‘Prosperity - A Compassionate, Just and Caring Nation’, the gesture by the Malawian community needed commendation.
He said also the gesture helped strengthen bilateral relations that existed between Botswana and Malawi.
“Your contribution will positively impact on the education and future of these children.
The gifts will also help raise their level of confidence and bolster performance,” said Kgosi Letshabo. He also in a special way applauded school management for impressive Standard 7 results recorded over the years.
During the 2015 and 2016 Standard 7 leaving examinations, the school recorded 75 per cent and 90 per cent respectively; a feat Kgosi Letshabo stated needed to be upheld.
The chairperson of Malawian community leaving in Botswana, Mr Pyoka Mfuni said other than fostering networks among fellow countrymen, Malawians leaving in Botswana believe in giving back to their hosts, whom he said have allowed them to lead dignified and peaceful lives.
“We believe that even people with poor backgrounds can make it to the top hence our collaboration with likeminded organisations such as AAP,” he said.
Mr Mfuni therefore called upon individuals and organisations alike to invest in the education of children in every way possible.
Chief education officer for South region, Ms Maipelo Kesenye said by adopting Maisane Primary School, AAP has positively responded to the call by government to bring on board various stakeholders who can help turn around the fortunes of the education system. She said outstanding results recorded by the school year in year out, were in part due to support by AAP and partners.
Ms Kesenye said if many could emulate both AAP and Malawian community, the sky would be the only limit.
The school head, Ms Pharma Sepako, was happy the uniforms and other gifts would motivate underprivileged pupils, some of whom she said, walk 10 kilometres to reach school.
The partnership, she said, would go a long way at helping the school achieve its long term objective of producing responsible and well-rounded citizens. BOPA
