Social clubs get soccer gear

20 Feb 2017

Eight social clubs commonly known as ‘Sunday teams’ in the Molepolole South constituency were on Wednesday donned with football kits, courtesy of The Good Samaritan Foundation.

The kits have an array of colours and will help in easy identification. The teams, which for a long time have been playing soccer in open spaces every Sunday, are now becoming phenomenal, given a large following.

They are of late attracting sponsors to professionalise their hobby after realising that Sunday football was more than just playing a game, but acts as social vehicles to behavioural change and community development.

The Good Samaritan Foundation, a non-profit organisation noticed the milestone and extended a helping hand by donating the football kits.

The organisation has also went as far as sponsoring football tournaments during public holidays for the same teams to motivate them and give supporters a chance to test for both communicable and non communicable diseases.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Assistant Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development, Kefentse Mzwinila applauded the organisation for what they were doing, stressing that, in their efforts to support the teams, they have gone as far as playing a remarkable role of blending leisure and wellness.

He further said getting people to test for various diseases was admirable for the benefit of taking preventative measures out-weighing curative ones. He also praised the organisation for creating awareness on health issues during soccer tournaments through the involvement of the District Health Management Teams.

The assistant minister therefore reiterated governments efforts of developing youth through sport as something that government alone could not achieve. Mzwinila also advised others to emulate Good Samaritan, saying that if others could follow suit, this country would move forward.

Chairperson of the Good Samaritan Foundation, Kabo Morwaeng said eventhough the foundation had not been launched officially, that has never deterred them from doing charitable work in Molepolole.

He said last year July during President’s Day holidays, the foundation sponsored a tournament for social clubs in the Molepolole South Constituency. BOPA
