Teachers welfare remains priority

20 Feb 2017

Ministry of Basic Education has a total of 14 597 secondary school teachers and 9 337 staff houses, Minister of Basic Education, Dr Unity Dow has said.

Responding to a question in Parliament from MP for Gaborone North, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa, Minister Dow said this implied that 36 per cent were sharing or were not currently accommodated in government housing.

“For all staff to be properly housed and not share, we would need an additional 5 260 houses,” she said. She also added that her ministry continued to prioritise teacher welfare and provided additional housing in 2016/17, ‘for example we have added 130 houses to make this total’.

Mr Nkaigwa wanted Dr Dow to state how many secondary school teachers were currently accommodated by government and how many were accommodated on a sharing basis.

In addition, Gaborone North MP also wanted the minister to state how many secondary school teachers were currently on the waiting list for accommodation from government and the strategies in place to provide accommodation for all secondary school teachers on a non-sharing basis.
