Horse racing attracts more interest in Kweneng West
14 Feb 2017
Kweneng West is characterised mostly by semi-deserts and open plains with pans, a barren of a land by any standards.
What is good is that residents of this area are now beginning to find ways of making the best out of their environment.
One such initiative is horse racing, a hobby which residents did not take much into consideration. But now it seems to be growing as a way of earning a living and entertainment.
With two official horse racing competitions taking place in villages which are only separated by a few kilometres, it has been evident that the people are now showing more interest in horse racing and investing in it than ever before.
In Motokwe there is an official event which has long been in existence but was officially registered two years back after being backed by mobile services network, Mascom as its official sponsor. The event has since become massive attracting more than 5 000 spectators to the tiny village every year during the independence holidays.
It has since seen growth in the business and tourism sector of the village and even exposing it to potential investors.
Just last year the nearby Dutlwe village also launched an event which is set to be an annual event which according to the official sponsors, intends to develop horse raising and use it to diversify the economy of the village.
Apart from the two horse racing events there are other horse racing competitions in other nearby villages such as Khekhenye, Tshwaane and Takatokwane even though they are not yet officially recognised and registered.
According to Mmoloki Semarite, one of the youths, the idea behind horse racing competitions was to bring attention to the Tswana breed which has gone unrecognised for a long time.
He said these horses have the ability to boost the economy of the country if taken seriously and are capable of diversifying the economy. ENDS
