General manager of Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa diamond mines says Intermine games are part of Debswana’s commitment towards sensitising its employees on issues of health and safety.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the games on June 9, Dr Adrian Gale said through such an initiative, the company also seeks to encourage employees to keep themselves healthy at all times.
Through exercising, the company will have a globally competitive human resource as healthy employees are a productive workforce.
He said sport involves competition, winning and losing. This exposes players to leadership aspects of success, he said. “It builds a competitive spirit in players and teaches them to make a contribution irrespective of whether the participation results in victory or defeat.”
Dr Gale added that playing sport teaches one to accept both success and failure in a positive spirit. He further said sport is beneficial for the development of social skills in a person.
“Sport teaches one to interact with people. It fosters collective thinking and develops planning skills. It builds confidence in sportsmen and women giving them a sense of accomplishment.”
Dr Gale said sport nourishes and strengthens the body and soul, instills self-discipline, teamwork and inculcates a drive to excel.
Dr Gale said he is of no doubt that the success witnessed during the games is a result of good investment of spirit, time and talent. ENDS
