09 Feb 2017

President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama on Thursday received letters of credence from the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden, Ms Cecilia Julin.

In an interview, Ms Julin stated that Botswana and Sweden relations started since the former’s independence, which saw some of the Swedish people finding residence here.

She highlighted that the two countries had worked together in many areas of development, adding that her area of focus would be infrastructure development, water, sanitation and education.

The ambassador noted that Sweden had been a development corporation partner to Botswana, however stating that the aid was terminated in 2013 when Botswana attained the status of  a middle income country.

She stated that Sweden was now focusing on giving aid to the poorest countries, adding that Botswana was now a success story admired by many.

Ms Julin said during her tenure she would like the two countries to work together on renewable energy and air pollution as there is a lot to learn from each other.

She highlighted that she had discussed how they can advocate for nature conservation and anti-poaching with President Khama.

The ambassador commended Botswana for the 50 years of independence celebrations last year, having attended the festivities with a delegation from Sweden.

She said about 40 Swedish nationals had travelled to Botswana during the 50th anniversary, which she said was a testimony of the strong relations between the two countries. ENDS
