Junior tennis starlets, Denzel Seetso, Tshegofatso Tsiang and Thato Holmes have been invited for an International Tennis Federation (ITF) trials in Kenya.
The trio are expected to take part in ITF trials scheduled for April with a chance of securing an ITF High Performance Centre scholarships.
Denzel, the number one seeded player in South Africa and Botswana, will take part under the under 14 category alongside Tshegofatso, while Thato will try his luck in the under 16 category.
In an interview, Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) spokesperson, Shelton Benzah said the nomination for the trials was a credit for trio’s performance at the African Junior Championship (AJC) in Namibia on January.
He said the trio impressed ITF officials, hence they were invited to take part in the junior tennis trials.
He said the selection was a special treat for BTA as this was the first time the association have had junior players nominated for the prestigious event.
“This means the future is stable in terms of tennis moving forward. The fact that they will be training in high performance centre, means more exposure and broad spectrum,” he said.
Benzah further explained that the trials was a recognition of hard work and talent, saying it was a great opportunity since it would be fully covered by ITF.
Even though only three players made it to the trials, he said BTA was happy that Batswana players had been selected.
Regarding the preparations, Benzah said there was an ongoing training programme for the players and they were also preparing for camp for another AJC, which is set to take place in South Africa, few days before the trio jet off to Kenya. ENDS
