11 Jun 2013
The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Nonofho Molefhi handed over two houses to orphans in Mmadinare and Damochujenaa on Friday.
Funds to construct the houses were raised by teachers from schools around the Central District.
Officially handing over the houses to the orphans who are students at junior secondary level, Minister Molefhi commended teachers for the good gesture. He said the move was in line with the Vision 2016 pillar of being a compassionate, just and caring nation.
Minister Molefi noted that the houses would restore dignity of the orphans and the families they lived with, adding that the move should teach the beneficiaries that they in turn should help other people who might be in need in future. “These houses serve as a foundation for the students lives as the houses will give the beneficiaries a conducive environment to live and study,” he said.
The minister urged the residents and the beneficiaries’ relatives to continue supporting the children but not to deprive them of their houses because it is their heritage.
Mr Molefhi, who is also Selebi Phikwe East MP, requested the Mmadinare and Damochujenaa village development committees to raise funds to fence the yards of the beneficiaries.
He also encouraged the orphans to start backyard gardens to produce vegetables for consumption. One of the beneficiaries in Mmadinare, 16-year-old a form two student at Merementsi Junior Secondary school lived in a mud hut with his grandmother and eight of his siblings who are also orphans, while the other beneficiary of Damochujenaa also aged 16, lived with his grandmother and siblings in a mud hut and is a form two student at Molalatau Junior Secondary School.
The teachers also donated three more houses in Tobane, Tshokwe and Robelela. The houses were handed over to the beneficiaries by deputy permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, Mr David Ratsatsi. ENDS
