School has low water supply

08 Dec 2016

Assistant Minister of Basic Education  Mr Moiseraele Goya admitted that students at Motsumi Junior Secondary School sometimes go for days without water or food.

Answering a question in Parliament he said the whole of the term students had been adequately fed, however acknowledging that the water supply to the school was low and the water reticulation in the school needs attention.

Furthermore, he said Motsumi JSS was a day school but also accommodate students from Remote Area Development Programme (RADP) adding that students from Kwee and Kedia settlements under the RADP were accommodated at Motsumi JSS.He said the drainage system around the kitchen was problematic, old and overloaded, and  was exacerbated by the lack of fat trap for oil and grease from the kitchen.

In addition, Mr Goya said there was a frequent bad odour around the kitchen due to poor drainage since 2010.“

I have dispatched technical officers to find solutions to these issues and address them by 2017," he said. Boteti East, Member of Parliament Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe had asked the Minister of Basic Education whether it was true that sometimes students go for days without water or food at Motsumi Junior Secondary School as a result of the poor water network and inadequate finances in the school account; if so the minister should confirm whether the school is a boarding school for students from Remote Area Development Programme settlements.

MP Lelatisitswe had wanted the minister to also state whether it is true that the drainage system around the kitchen is not working; whether the area/kitchen is surrounded by a bad odour; and how long has this been happening and what will he do to address the situation. ENDS
