Some people do hair-dressing to keep themselves busy while many use it as a source of income.
Ms Onkarabetse Tsietso of Tsabong does hair-dressing for a living.
Her passion for hair-dressing started when she was still at primary school where she used to plait other students on weekends.
After completing her studies she started to do it as a part time job.
She worked in a salon for a year in 2002 in order to improve her hair-dressing skills and learning other hair techniques.
Before operating her business she decided to look for a job and she was employed at the Mokha Lodge as a waitress.
“I just wanted to do something new and different. When time went on I started having an idea of starting my own business and the idea that I only I had was to open a beauty salon”, she said.
In 2014, she decided to turn her passion into business.
“What inspired me to start my business is the love I have for hair, I am very passionate about making people’s heads to look clean, smart and beautiful”, she said.
Ms Tsietso said she used her savings to buy the salon equipment and other accessories, noting that hair-dressing is one of the cheapest businesses that someone can venture into.
“You just start it with your own comb and hands and then everything unfold, you only need equipment when you want to expand it by including washing hair, retouching and others”, she explained how easy her business can be.
Poverty eradication programme promised to assistance her after approaching them, but she is yet to receive the equipment.
She went for a one week training, thanks to the poverty eradication programme.
She noted that she invested a lot in her business to be successful because it is her sole source of income.
Ms Tsietso is cworking on registering her business, adding that the challenge she faced was with people who failed to pay for services provided.
“I buy my hair products from wholesales in Tsabong and they are expensive as I cannot afford to buy them in Gaborone where they are cheaper”, she added.
