Women league kickoff weekend

16 Nov 2016

After a lot of uncertainty regarding the start of women super league this season, all the relevant stakeholders have reached a common ground that it should start despite some teething problems in the league administration.

Botswana Football Association had stopped the women super league hoping to integrate it into the association structures this season.

However, that was not possible, hence the commencement of the league.  The league kickoff with a game between Gaborone United and Lobatse-based Meat Girls at Water Utilities.  Wonder Girls will face  Makufa while UB Kicks will take on Kanye Swallows at UB Stadium.New comers, FC Ambassadors will test waters against Prisons at Prisons ground. All the games will be on Saturday.

On Sunday, it will be battle of titans at Ledumang Secondary School when The Big Sisters host the stubborn, Double Action.

On paper, Action are the favourite but Big Sisters are unpredictable and very confident team which shows little respect for the “so called big teams”.

Action coach, Alex Malete is aware that Big Sisters encounter will not be a walkover.

He said in an interview that it was going to be a tough game adding that there were no easy games in the women super league.

Action, he said was expecting a good fight from the Big Sisters given that they had a good youthful team. He said their preparation had not been easy because at one time when they had completed their pre-season training, they were told that the league had been postponed with rumours that the league would only be played next year.

“At that time my players were in good shape and motivated. Postponing the league meant that we had two weeks long break without training.

We have started our preparations again. We are doing our best to get players in good shape and prepare them psychologically,” he said.

Malete said they had tightened their squad by signing Lesego Radiakanyo who is an attacker, defender, Brilliant Jonas and goalkeeper, Malebogo Leposwa in order to challenge for the honours this season.

Big Sisters coach, Dimakatso Odisitse said despite the fact that their preparation was impeded by the postponement of the league, the girls were ready to face Action.

“It will be a battle of David and Gorliat. But for my girls, playing against Action on its own is a motivation.

In a nutshell, the morale is very high and they are all looking forward to display good football,” he said.

Still on Sunday, defending league champions, Township Rollers will host South East Girls at Mma-Masire Ground. BOPA
