06 Nov 2016

Parliament has been informed that Ghanzi Primary Hospital provide holistic primary care to all patients including those with kidney diseases.

Assistant Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Dikgang Makgalemele said this included continuation of care for patients with end-kidney disease who had been placed on Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) and Haemodialysis.

He said healthcare staff from Ghanzi, Maun and other parts of the country, have been trained to care for end-stage kidney disease patients.Furthermore, Mr Makgalemele said Princess Marina Hospital transplant staff do monthly outreach services to review patients in the district, while currently there are no plans beyond what is provided.

He however, noted that between August 2015 and August 2016, 17 patients died due to complications of end stage renal disease and not dialysis, and none of these were from Ghanzi.

Ghanzi North MP, Mr Noah Salakae had wanted to know what type of care was provided for kidney patients at Ghanzi Primary Hospital, if none, when the public should expect them at the hospital.

The MP had also wanted to know how many people died under peritoneal dialysis care every year. ENDS
