Gaborone United secure P2 million deal

03 Nov 2016

Gaborone United got a shot in the arm after securing a P2 million sponsorship deal from Zac Construction and Mobicel.

The two companies would sponsor the Money Machine with P1 million per season.

Speaking during  a sponsorship launch, Zac Construction managing director, Nicolas Zakhem, said he had been with Gaborone United family for more than 10 years, although he decided to quit the club last year.

“I decided to quit the club because I don't like football politics, not that I did not love GU. When people from the same club start to fight and their war end at the court room is not good for development of football, “he said.

Zakhem said for any football club to progress, harmony and peace should prevail since internal fights attracted negativity and had potential to derail the team's performance.

Furthermore, he said his ambition was to see GU as one of the leading club in Botswana, and that could only be attained if stakeholders worked as a unit.

“Make no mistake, I love Gaborone United and I have a special corner for the club in my heart, today, tomorrow and more years to come. However I wish the players, technical team and the executive all the best throughout the season, “he said.

Former GU administrator, Patrick Masimolole urged Gaborone United family to desist from internal fighting as no sponsor would like to be associated with controversy.

Sponsors, he said, wanted to invest their money where there was peace and stability, adding that recently there was too much politics in football.

“During our time there was no politics in football, we don't want such things. As we call ourselves Gaborone United, we must remain united so that at the end of the day we achieve our goal of winning what we have targeted, “he said.

Masimolole further said GU was a brand that needed to be protected adding that therefore if internal fight persist, the brand would die a natural death, because sponsors will definitely shun the team. ENDS
