30 Oct 2016
The Minister of Basic Education, Dr Unity Dow, has says she is not aware that her ministry procured porta-cabin classrooms for Kgosi Mpe Junior Secondary School in Jwaneng, which were never delivered.
Answering a question in Parliament, Dr Dow nevertheless said additional facilities would be constructed in NDP 11.
She stated that in 2013, her ministry instigated a process of procurement for portable classrooms and offices to assist schools in need, which included Kgosi Mpe.
She, however, said the process was curtailed due to financial constraints and porta-cabins were procured.
She pointed out that Kgosi Mpe was a nine stream school that was operating in an infrastructure designed for a six stream school.
She said the school's outdoor teaching areas had been converted into two classrooms and Debswana Majwe Mining Company had donated a hall that was also used as a classroom for some practical subjects, as such, an extra three classrooms have been created to increase teaching space as a temporary measure.
Member of Parliament for Jwaneng-Mabutsane, Mr Shawn Nthaile had asked the minister if she was aware that some caravans, which were procured for Kgosi Mpe were never delivered.
Mr Nthaile had also wanted to know what action would be taken to address the problem. ENDS
