17 Oct 2016

Selebi Phikwe volleyball club has finally won a season’s second set ever since joining the women Mascom Volleyball League this season.
However, despite winning the set, the team lost 1-3 to Mag Stimela.
Selebi Phikwe , who put up a spirited fight against Mahalapye based Mag Stimela on in Serowe Saturday stormed to win the first set 25-20 and thereby registering their second set win ever.
They won their first set in the first leg when they were new to the elite volleyball league a.
The second set in the weekend game saw slump in their performance and affirmed their rookie status.
Maboka Molefi’s Mag Stimela grabbed the second set by 25-21 to set the game to a four set thriller.
Though Makgeta Gareanna’s Selebi Phikwe tasted blood and displayed one of their best league performances by far, their performance was devoid in key ingredients such as self-belief and confidence.
Lack of such ingredients rendered individual players failing the basics of pass, set and hit.
However, the SVC came across as an improved side that also played with an active libero.
By all accounts, Mag Stimela looked like one of SVC’s easiest customers and coach Gareanna affirmed it.
Throughout the proceedings Gareanna cut a relaxed mentor even when his ladies shot themselves in foot, a stark contrast to Molefi who stood on the sidelines, urging his ladies on.
The third set was a tightly contested showpiece with both sides reaching for their level best but, experienced prevailed as the BR Express backed Mag Stimela garnered a 25-23 scoreline.
The fourth and last set the Selibe Phikwe side lost 20-25 to the Mahalapye based outfit in a game that started in a somewhat slow motion.
From a distance one could clearly hear the sound of a drop ball, the screeching of sneakers and shouts of ladies as either player called for free balls and pass amongst other things.
So audible were the coaches shouting instructions from the benches whilst the blow of the whistle was as deafening.
In other games, Selebi Phikwe  were hauled through raging fire by visiting Spiking Stars and dispatched them to a 3-0 scoreline.
Spiking Stars then shoved off Mag Stimela by 3-1. ENDS
