BNOC equips administrators
11 Oct 2016
Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) has conducted four Advanced Sport Management Courses (ASMC) in the quadrennial year 2013-2016.
The course entailed modules such as good governance, sport marketing, managing finance and hosting major events.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, BNOC board member, Bernadette Moruti, said the course was meant to help participants bring about change in their organisations.
She said after realising the need to develop more sport administrators, BNOC found it prudent to run two ASMC last year with a view to ensure that their mission of developing more sport administrators was realised.
Moruti told the 15 graduates that expectations were that they would use skills acquired to better their sport codes and share the information with other members in their organisations, given that by doing so they would be ensuring that there was knowledge management throughout.
The course director, Moses Moruisi said the courses were funded by Olympic Solidarity (OS) at US$12 000 (P127,158.07) per course and in addition to financial support OS provided manuals for the students free.
Talking about the enrolment, he said all those who successfully enrolled for the ASMC applied through their respective national federations, adding that was done for transparency and fairness and to also make sure that those trained were sports administrators.
Moruisi said each course had to run for six classes in six months, and two sessions were done, one weekend a month.
He said at the end of each class, participants did case studies on their individual national federations and at the beginning of the course 25 successfully enrolled.
“Of the the 25, 19 were from national federationss, two journalists, one from Sports Volunteer Movement (SVM) and one expatriate at the recommendation of the Zimbabwean Olympic Committee, and only 15 successfully submitted their final assignments which were sent to IOC in Switzerland for marking, and they all passed and are graduating today,” he said.
