School management decries lack of parental involvement

10 Oct 2016

Lack of parental involvement in the children’s education has been described as a major setback in the school’s academic performance.

These concerns were uttered by the deputy school head of Bakwena Kgari Junior Secondary School Ms Kebalathe Segajane at the 20th anniversary of the school.

Ms Segajane stated that parents do not partake in their children’s education as they never attend parents teacher association meetings nor collect reports of their children to mention but a few.

She added that reluctance and lack of participation by the parents in the school’s activities was a discouraging factor to the students.

The deputy school head maintained that the motivation that students got from their teachers alone could not be enough.

She argued that students needed support from their homes in order to realise their dreams.

Ms Segajane encouraged the few actively involved parents to encourage their fellows back home to do the same.

Meanwhile at the 20th anniversary school celebrations, the Business Development manager at Letshego Financial Services (Central Region), Mr Ezekiel Sebina urged students to refrain from drug abuse saying it distracted them from their primary role being learning.

He also alluded to the fact that issues of HIV/AIDS were also real and therefore students must be in their good behavior to avoid contracting such.

Mr Sebina encouraged students saying their devotion to learning was important. He added that parents and teachers were only available to help students discover their potential and a life-long love of learning. He added that information on its own was not enough for success but hard work and devotion were essential elements.

Mr Sebina emphasized the importance of teamwork within the school saying it was a key component towards success.

He urged students to be actively involved in extra-curricular activities where they can explore their talents and could later make a living out of arts and sports.

Bakwena Kgari Junior Secondary School was celebrating 20 years of existence having been established in 1996.

According to Mr Bakwena Kgari, the school was named after his late grandfather, Mr Bakwena Kgari who was the first Member of Parliament for Serowe South.

The late Bakwena Kgari has been said to have served in several ministerial portfolios initially as Assistant Minister of Finance and Minister of State in the Office of the President amongst others. ENDS
