26 Sep 2016

Gxhabara Primary School in Maun organised a colourful event on Friday to welcome its hero and former student, Karabo Sibanda.

Sibanda is currently the Under 20 Junior world second fastest 400 metres athlete.

It was a joyful day which would remain ingrained in the hearts of those who attended, especially those who did not know Sibanda.

Indeed, the junior athlete received a warm welcome that befitted his stature, as pupils dressed in Botswana colours stood along the roads flying the country’s flag, as the hero arrives in the school premises escorted by the police.

The event was characterised by ululations, songs, poems, drama and motivational speeches by different speakers who took turns to share Sibanda’s history from primary school until he became the renowned 400 metres athlete.

The school head, Tracy Mokunki described him as a star, a hero and celebrity.

She said Sibanda was a blessing to the school, Maun and the country at large due to his sterling performance in sports.

She thanked Sibanda’s parents for playing a critical role in grooming their son into a responsible citizen noting that during his stay in the school, he displayed acceptable behaviour.

She said they found it fit to organise the welcome ceremony as they wanted Sibanda to trace his roots and motivate and groom the youngsters so that they could penetrate the international industry in sport.

Narrating Sibanda’s life while at primary, she said he was not performing well academically but he surprised his teachers as he passed standard seven with flying colours.

It was reported that Sibanda was born a multi-skilled athlete, as he was once a national team chess player and also an athlete.

She recalled the day when the young athlete got position 8 and 7 in 100 metres and 200 metres respectively and he wanted to quit.

First National Bank regional manager, Kelebogile Disang said Sibanda’s performance at the Rio Olympic 2016 made the nation proud.

She said the young man inspired many including the youngsters as all were eager to watch him when he participated in the finals.

For his part, Sibanda appreciated the warm welcome extended to him and thanked all those who played a vital role towards his success.

His mother, Masego Sibanda described his son as a loyal and well-disciplined child who still obeys his parents. ENDS
