Mayor laments poor roads
25 Sep 2016
Gaborone City mayor, councillor Kagiso Thutlwe has raised concern regarding infrastructure development in the city.
Speaking during the ongoing full council meeting in Gaborone, mayor Thutlwe said the road network was badly worn out.
He pointed out that they have been doing maintenance works in most of the roads, adding that a total of 4787.87m2 of potholes have been covered in various roads.
He also said a project involving desilting of the storm water drainage along KT Motsete next to BTV circle was 100 per cent complete.
He explained that the project was delayed due to the leakage of a sewer line next to the drain which discharged a lot of water into the drains hence the work had to stop until the flows were cleared up.
Mayor Thutlwe said another project entailing desilting and removal of reeds up and downstream of Segoditshane River commenced on August 22, 2016.
He said the works include cleaning and removal of all obstruction from the waterway under the two bridges.
He said the works would cost over P1 million and take 12 weeks to complete.
Meanwhile, the mayor informed councillors that the council has been allocated over P14 million from the fuel levy by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to undertake road maintenance projects for Maratadiba road in Extension 15 and resealing of the Paul Rantao road in Block 7 and 8.
He said the works were anticipated to start in October 2016, saying they have invited 100 per cent citizen companies to execute the works, which would create employment and empower citizens. ENDS
