25 Sep 2016

Maun -based Destination Management Company Safari Destinations has praised government for showing commitment to the growth of the tourism industry.

The company’s managing director, Ms Lorraine Potter said they had achieved a lot through support from government noting that the company managed to add value to the supply chain and generate additional revenue within Botswana that was previously realised beyond their borders.

She made the remarks during the company’s 10th birthday ceremony where she also stated that they enjoyed a great support from Botswana Tourism Organisation in promoting the destination which had had a significant impact on their success.

“Our growth has enabled the hiring and development of Botswana citizens and we are committed to the development of our in-house training programme,” she added.

Ms Potter also expressed gratitude to the tourism industry partners stating that their commitment to supporting local businesses had been invaluable and encouraged them to continue strengthening the relationship.

She explained that they had partnered with Travel For Impact making a commitment to embrace the bed night levy as a means of raising funds for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) serving the local community.

She said this year alone, they managed to collect close to half a million pula and thanked all their agents and guest for supporting the initiative.

Realising the significance of the contribution, the company launched BOT 10 for 50 campaign, which saw the organisation donating 500 hours to community service, along with substantial financial and material donations.

In addition to support the NGOs, the company donated a community bus which would be used to transport caregivers and food parcels to the elderly as well as transporting children from Bana Ba Letsatsi between school and their homes among other things.

Unveiling the bus and handing over to the beneficiaries, Ms Potter explained that it was purchased using the project funds in conjunction with money raised through the bed night levy.

She explained that supporting the community was a fundamental value of Safari Destinations.

Currently, she said they were sitting on 305 hours and they managed to carry out several projects amongst them, the refurbishment of the reception area at Women Against Rape, donation of winter clothes, the golden years fashion show and time spent cleaning, cooking and caring for the elderly. ENDS
