Deteriorating school perfomance worries govt

22 Sep 2016

Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Moiseraele Goya has urged Kang parents to be actively involved in their children’ s education.

Speaking at a kgotla meeting recently, Mr Goya said the government was disturbed by the deteriorating school performances in the village, hence the need for parents to reinforce partnerships with teachers.

He said the public was always quick to point fingers at the government and teachers,  but that it should be noted that the home plays a pivotal role in a child’s upbringing and that parents’ involvement would make a positive impact.

Mr Goya further said when children do not perform to satisfaction, the whole nation should be ready to take the blame; stand together and re-strategise on how best to rectify the situation before it worsens.

The minister said the government was working to ensure that there was academic excellence in the country.

“Surely it is a mountain to climb when talking about the challenges we as government are facing regarding education in the country, but we will not rest until we overcome,” he said.

He said no child should be labelled as not academically gifted and neglected, but that they should be nurtured and encouraged to work hard to improve their grades.

He also appealed to the public to work together in ensuring that they instill respect in pupils.

“A child who is not disciplined cannot excel in their studies and these children belong to all of us, let us sharpen their future for the better,” he said.

Mr Goya said it should be noted that education was a lifetime achievement, an answer to every question and also a master key to unlock all doors to improve living standards, hence there was need to keep a close eye.

Furthermore, the minister explained that his ministry was working round the clock to find a suitably qualified headmaster for Matsha Senior Secondary School, and that the public should expect one in the near future.

He expressed sympathy towards the tragedy that befell the school last year, and assured that they intend to ensure that such issues never arise in the future. He also appealed to the public to keep a watchful eye on the situation.

For her part, Kgosi Basadi Seipone of Kang said the current schools performance in the village was worrisome, especially in secondary schools.
She noted that children indulged in wayward behaviour and vandalised equipment, saying ir was  a major contributing factor to their low grades.

However, she explained that they intend to come together and unite to improve the situation, saying Kang has the ability to produce professionals just like any other learning institution in the country. Ends
