Maun Senior Secondary School head, Ms Selebatso Modisaemang has appealed to parents to help address the issue of students’ drop out due to pregnancy.
Ms Modisaemang said it was worrisome that students who dropped due to pregnancy were day scholars who spend time with their parents.
Ms Modisaemang was speaking at the school's prize giving ceremony. She said it was disheartening that some students were abusing drugs especially dagga. She advised parents to observe changes in their children’s behavior and engage experts where necessary.
Furthermore, Ms Modisaemang said the school’s performance was unsatisfactory with a slight improvement of 22 per cent pass rate in 2014 to 23 per cent in 2015.
However, Ms Modisaemang said the school has recently sent Maun SSS teachers on a bench marking mission to high performing schools such as Naledi senior and St Joseph’s College.
Ms Modisaemang said other teachers went on cultural exchange programmes through USA support.
She noted that through the Maduo Top Ten project, which was launched last year, the school aimed to ensure that results improved.
The prize giving ceremony, she said, was a platform to reflect on the school’s performance.
However, Ms Modisaemang noted that it was not all gloom with the school as they continue to excel in sports.
Ms Modisaemang said the school and the North West region as a whole has produced sporting persons’ of repute in the country and continues to do so.
She noted that Maun senior has won 20 gold medals at the Botswana Integrated Sports Association (BISA) competitions, 10 silver medals and three bronze medals.
Ms Modisaemang said a male student athlete, Leungo Scotch has been identified by a USA based team and that he was awaiting his Form Five completion to join the international team.
The school, she said, prides itself for others such as chess medalist, Karabo Sakuze and former students such as Karabo Sibanda, who was transferred to Good Hope senior.
In his remarks, FNBB manager, Mr Mark Rintjes encouraged students to focus on their education as it unearths talent and gives one freedom and a bright future.
Mr Rintjes said it was a shame that some students were involved in drug abuse and unruly behavior.
However, Mr Rintjes encouraged students to utilise initiatives in the school such as the Maduo Top Ten projects which were in place to improve performance. Ends
