BTA to host tourney

Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) will host the 10th National Junior Open tennis tournament at Francistown Club, Clifton and John McKenzie English medium schools on September 24-25.

Speaking in an interview, BTA junior technical manager, Serwalo Lesolame said the tournament would have players from all schools and clubs across the country.

“The tournament will include both boys and girls for categories of U-18, U-16, U-14, U-12 and U-10,” he added.

Lesolame said they were expecting about 100 entries and they would be closing the registration on September 23 for both the singles and doubles.

He further said they were expecting some of the best players in the country such as U-18 Botswana Games Champion, Kelebogile Monnayo of BDF Donga Tennis Club and Leungo Monnayo of Confederation of African Tennis- Region IV.

He noted that some of the players in the tournament would go to represent the country at the African Union Sports Council Region 5 at Luanda later this year.

In addition, he applauded parents, coaches and other stakeholders for their continued support in the sport as they were experiencing improved quantity and quality in terms of participation.

He further cited that theU-10 team had increased in numbers, adding that it was promising because “it is always easier to teach youngsters than the grown-ups because they learn faster and stand better chances of being future champions.” Ends
