Corporation donates house

20 Sep 2016

Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) has donated a two-roomed house to Gaborekwe family in Mochudi worth over P39 000.

Speaking during the official handing over of the house, director of Sustainability and Water Resources, Mr Gaselemogwe Senai said corporate social responsibility projects were treated as an integral part of WUC’s business activities.

He said they were privileged to be making a difference in other people’s lives by uplifting and improving their well-being.

The responsibility to care for the less privileged should not be government’s responsibility alone, but all should take part and play their role, he added.

He further said, ‘WUC does not only supply potable water and manage waste water services to and for Batswana but has taken a position to fully participate in community activities thus fostering positive corporation-community relations.’

“In every community that we operate in, we remain committed to uplift lives, care for the environment we operate in and be part of the community we serve,” said the director.

Mr Senai added that WUC would focus its funding through a strong emphasis on management area specific community development which stands to benefit a wide section of the community rather than an individual with select national flagship projects that aim to profile the corporation, build its reputation and allow it to partner with key stakeholders.

He said their focus areas would be among others community development, education, music and art.

Mr Senai applauded WUC staff in Mochudi for working together in unity to complete the project adding that they have contributed towards its completion by connecting water and electricity, fencing the yard, completing another house structure and building a pit latrine toilet.

“On top of that, WUC employees have paid the water bill from the date of connection till today from their pockets and have also contributed more than P15 000,” said Mr Senai.

Giving an overview of the project, the general manager of WUC, Ms Yvonne Mothupi said they have different programmes in place geared at helping the communities.

Projects carried out so far, she said included litter picking but this time around they wanted to do something different which will impact on the lives of people.

Ms Mothupi further said they met with several stakeholders in the community among them Bakgatla Bolokang Matshelo and the area social worker who helped them identify Ms Pona Gaborekwe.

She said after assessing her situation they were challenged to help her and took a decision to build the house for the family.

The general manager said part of the money towards the construction came from employees through fund raising activities and individual contributions.

Ms Mothupi said they were happy to have put a smile and made a difference in the lives of Gaborekwe’s family.

The beneficiary, Ms Pona Gaborekwe ran short of words to express her joy towards the beautiful house built for her by WUC.

She said indeed they were sent by God to come and assist her family and her life has been changed by the good gesture.

Ms Gaborekwe said God would bless the WUC employees.

The deputy district commissioner, Mr Boamogetswe Monyena entreated the family to care for the house and keep it clean and tidy.

He said it was important for something given to one by love to be duly cared for and protected. ENDS
