Council expands Pilane

20 Sep 2016

Kgatleng District Council has taken a decision to expand the Pilane landfill which has already reached its life span.
Speaking during the Kgatleng District Council session on September 19, the chairperson, Mr Mpho Morolong said funds have been secured from the general fund for the development of an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and the construction of the expansion fence.
He said a tender to engage a private environmental assessment practitioner to develop an environmental management plan for the site has been advertised and estimated to take three months.
Mr Morolong said with regard to the fencing component of the landfill, the clearing of the boundary line has commenced and that the invitation for tender to fence the area would close on 28 September 2016.
The chairperson also told councillors that the district was still experiencing indiscriminate littering, especially in Mochudi, where people embark on the nocturnal disposal of refuse bags in some bus stops.
Mr Morolong appealed to the culprits to desist from the indecent acts, adding that he would be pleased if they continue to engage communities in ensuring sustainable clean-up campaigns in preparation for the upcoming 50th independence celebrations and beyond.
He noted that the council has received 152 empty drums from Orapa Diamond Mine as a donation, saying the gesture has come at an opportune time when they were unable to provide drums to the community due to budgetary constraints.
The chairperson said the drums have been distributed to Mochudi, Mmathubudukwane and Oodi, and that they would offer relief to the villages, but said a lot has to be done.
He appealed to those who have the financial means to acquire their own and register for collection with the council.
On household refuse collection, Mr Morolong said he was pleased that the district was experiencing an increase in the number of people coming forward to register for waste collection services.
He said they have decided to engage additional contractors to cater for the increase, and applauded councillors of the affected villages.
However, Mr Morolong said it was unfortunate that some contractors continue to violate the agreement they have signed, and that they have decided to terminate their services. ENDS
