Madigele encourages testing for cancer
19 Sep 2016
The Assistant Minister of Health Dr Alfred Madigele has advised Batswana to test for cancer on a regular basis.
Speaking during a wellness day in Gasita last weekend, Dr Madigele explained that cancer was curable if diagnosed on time.
However, he raised concern that despite efforts by government to fight the silent killer disease through awareness and availing health care services, many people continued to succumb to the condition.
Dr Madigele thus advised every woman above 21 years of age to test for cervical and breast cancer adding they were the most affected.
Dr Madigele, also area Member of Parliament further challenged men to test for prostate cancer. He was however worried that most men usually dragged their feet with regards to health related issues but warned that procrastination could cost them dearly.
Dr Madigele, to this end, encouraged all Batswana to eat food rich in roughage like beans, sorghum, maize, lean meat, avoid fats and refined products which he warned precipitated non-communicable diseases such as Hypertension, Sugar diabetes and Cancer among others.
The wellness coordinator Ms Maureen Mpho, for her part, challenged residents of Gasita to do physical exercise or household chores that could engage their bodies physically on a regular basis to stay healthy.
Mr Simon Ramaphoi in his closing remarks thanked Dr Madigele for extending the wellness day initiative to the residents of Gasita.
He said raising awareness on non-communicable diseases empowered Batswana with information to steer clear.
On other issues, Mr Ramaphoi also area councillor implored government to upgrade Gasita clinic. He said the clinic serviced Dintsana, Lorolwane, and Selokolela among others. ENDS
