Residents owe land board millions

Kgalagadi Land Board is experiencing high levels of lease rental arrears which currently stands at almost P10 million.
Kgalagadi council chairperson, Mr Justice Nkwane said during the ongoing full council session last week.
He said people continue to default on payment of their agreed lease rentals despite numerous efforts aimed at encouraging them to pay.
He said this was tantamount to breach of contract and may lead to undesirable consequences for such defaulters.
He urged councillors to encourage their constituents to make regular payments as per their lease agreement to avoid any antagonism with land authorities.
On other land related issues, Mr Nkwane revealed that Kgalagadi Land Board continues to implement the land registration component of the LAPCAS project.
He stated that although there was progress in the exercise, there were still some plots which remain unadjudicated because their owners have not come forward to register and were unknown to their neighbours.
He said councillors should encourage the public to come forth because failure to do so may result in undesirable outcomes.
“The land board has continued to maintain waiting lists across the district for all those waiting to be allocated plots and these are regularly updated and are open to the public for inspection,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said of the 51 funded turnkey houses under BHC in Tsabong sub-district, 12 have been completed and handed over to beneficiaries, two were complete and awaiting handing over while 34 were at various stages of construction.
He pointed out that in Hukuntsi sub district, 14 were complete and handed over, 23 were at plaster and finishing level, five were awaiting handing over and four were at superstructure and below levels. ENDS
