Gaborone University College of Law and Professional Studies (GUC) has as part of its endeavour to support the community pledged to train 25 young and unemployed ECCO City Greens players.
In an interview, the academic coordinator of GUC, Agreement Kagura said the players would be studying for a certificate in sales and marketing through distance learning provided by the college.
He said they accepted the team’s request to train its players because they have been in a long-term relationship with the team dating back to when the team was still in the premier league.
“Our obligation is to give service to the community as a way of assisting the government in line with the Vision 2016 pillar of an educated and informed nation,” he said.
Kagura further said beneficiaries of the programme would be sponsored by the college at an estimated cost of P7 200 per player during their year of study.
He said should the players wish to continue to higher qualification they would be given the opportunity.
For his part, ECCO City Greens chairperson, Mothibedi Latlhang thanked the college for the gesture, saying education was an investment that should be cherished.
He further added that education should be cherished and that GUC has shown to be a true embodiment of the pillar of an informed and educated nation.
Latlhang encouraged the players to take the scholarship seriously and become good ambassadors of both the college and the team. One of the beneficiaries, 24-year-old Galebuse Masala said he was thankful for the initiative.
He said since football was a short career they would have something to fall back on once it comes to an end.
Masala encouraged his team mates to work hard to complete their studies. ENDS
