Companies drill youth on work readiness

The Progressive Institute together with Premiere Company hosted a work readiness seminar in Gaborone on Tuesday (September 13).

The workshop was aimed at assisting youth to ready themselves for employment opportunities.

When facilitating at the seminar, career advisor at Progressive Institute, Mr Mmoloki Mmolotsi said the difference between getting employed and not rested on how prepared the person was and how they presented themselves to potential employers.

He advised job seekers to develop unique selling points that could set them apart from others.

“What is on your CV should be exactly who you are. It should tell the story of your life in terms of your academics, work experience and your background. Your unique selling point is yourself as an individual,” Mr Mmolotsi said.

He advised participants at the seminar to avoid filling their CVs with what they were not, as employers used that information to screen them during interviews. He further said they should tailor make their CVs for every job they applied for.

When deliberating on emotional intelligence and self-awareness, Ms Corlia Peter of Premiere Company said emotional intelligence helped people ecognise and understand their emotions and those of others in the workplace.

“Emotional intelligence comes in when you get rejected, how you have to handle yourself in such a situation. How psychologically are you prepared to handle what the job throws at you,” she said.

Ms Peter also said self-awareness helps people to know their strengths and weaknesses and how to manage themselves in the workplace. ENDS
