Thirty schools for chess finals

Thirty senior secondary schools have been selected for the Botho University senior secondary schools chess team finals to be held in Francistown on August 17-18.
Fifteen schools were selected from the boys section and 15 from the girls section.
The selections were done during the Botho University chess tournament held at Ledumang Secondary school over the weekend.
In the boys section, Francistown Secondary School (FSS) emerged the overall winners to qualify for the finals with 25.5 points followed by Matsheke Hill School with 19.5 points.
Third on the spot was Seepapitso Senior Secondary School with 19 points.
Shashe River School emerged number 15 while the host (Ledumang Secondary School) failed to qualify after occupying position 18 out of 43 secondary schools that took part in the annual competition.
In the girls section, Nata Secondary School girls were a hard nut to crack by beating all the 27 secondary schools that attended the tournament and were crowned the overall winner with 20 points.
Second was Molefhi Secondary School with 19.5 points while Lotsane Secondary School occupied third position.
However, FSS girls performed badly than their male counterparts and occupied position 15 to qualify for the finals.
Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) public relations officer said BCF established a three-year partnership of P120 000 with Botho University in 2012 to sponsor the senior schools teams chess championships.
The tournament was open to all senior secondary schools.
The 2012 winners were Nata and Mogoditshane senior secondary schools in the boys and girls categories respectively. ENDS
