Chairman for Kweneng District Council, Mr Jeffrey Sibisibi, has assured residents of Letlhakeng that the village's infrastructure development project, which comprises of internal roads, streetlights and storm water drainage will be completed in December. Addressing a kgotla meeting in Letlhakeng on Wednesday, Cllr Sibisibi said the project, which started in 2013 and was supposed to be completed this year in April, was at 85 per cent.
“When the project was ongoing, we experienced some challenges on both the council and the community’s side and we are happy today to announce that most of those challenges have been overcome,” he said.
Some of the challenges revealed in previous briefings included among others, the delay to secure a burrow pit for gravel by the contractor, shortage of skilled manpower as well as the identification of some graves along routes earmarked for the road.
Cllr Sibisibi said some of the remaining issues included, among others, assessing houses affected by the construction and that a team of assessors, which comprised representatives from the council, the contractors and the community would be sent to the village to do the assessment.
Residents appreciated Cllr Sibisibi's update on the project.
One resident, Mr Ralosonyane Sedietso said they had been worried as rumour had it that as soon as they completed the project, the contractor would leave, which did not sit well with those whose houses had developed cracks due to construction of the roads.
Cllr Sibisibi also advised residents to be patient as other developments would be considered with time.
This was after they called for gravelling of roads at the new plots in the village, which had not been covered by the internal roads project.
On other issues, Letlhakeng acting deputy district commissioner, Mr Boammaaruri Otlhogile informed the gathering that Letlhakeng North Village Development Committee (VDC) had submitted names of public offices that defaulted on their monthly rentals, and said that they have met with the said offender and have promised to pay.
He said the agreement with the officers was that should they continue to default, the arrears will be deducted directly from their salaries.
Kgosi Tumelo Puleng appreciated the council leadership for their constant update on progress of the project, but advised that repairs necessitated by the construction of the road on houses should be fixed quickly. ENDS
