President of Botswana National Olympics Committee (BNOC) Negroes Kgosietsile said sporting activities provide a platform for talent search and scouting among the youth.
Speaking during the launch of the 1st Kgabo Half Marathon at Botswana Family Welfare Association (BOFWA) in Mochudi on Thursday, Kgosietsile said sport has always helped mould young people as they invested their time into something positive.
The first annual Kgabo Half Marathon is scheduled for October 29 in Mochudi under the theme: Integrated Sports, Excellence for a Healthy and Prosperous Nation.
The race is divided into three categories being the 21km, 10km and 5km.
He said the marathon would encourage people to exercise and and encourage tourists to visit the district, while at the same time empowering small businesses economically.
He therefore urged the organisers to plan the marathon well and turn it into an event that many people can always look forward to being part of it.
Kgosietsile said he was happy that the race was organised by youth who wanted to engage their peers and benefit from the race.
He therefore implored the organisers to ensure that they create a platform for growth and give the event the publicity it deserves.
He urged them to engage all stakeholders in the community and bring all on board adding that they should learn from others so that they make informed decisions and make the best of the event.
“You must work as a team and assign each other according to capability, credibility and willingness not friendship.”
The marathon coordinator, Keemenao Mogwane said the initiative started as a dream and turned into reality after realising that Kgatleng district does not have sport activities that could engage the youth.
The idea was started by a group of youth from Plight for Teen Mothers Organisation and BOFWA in Mochudi. ENDS
