Council secretary implores school heads to act responsibly

05 Sep 2016

Senior assistant council secretary (SACS) for Molepolole Administrative Authority (MAA), Mr Gofaone Kgabanyane, has challenged primary school heads to ensure proper supervision and monitoring of works in their respective schools.

Addressing primary school heads’ during the annual conference organised by MAA recently, Mr Kgabanyane said school heads, as accounting officers, were bound to ensure proper execution of duties.

He was responding to concerns raised by school heads about shoddy work done by some construction companies hired for infrastructural maintenance in schools and lack of supervision by council staff.

He said failure to take appropriate action by the school head or any person in the senior management was liable to stern action as they were the custodians and overseers of government properties falling within their jurisdictions.

On the issue of shortage of accommodation, Mr Kgabanyane challenged public officers to be aware of the fact that provision of accommodation by government was not a right but a privilege.

He advised that in order to alleviate high shortage of accommodation, the sub-council will be left with no choice but to consider sharing to accord the same privilege to individuals who had been in the waiting list since there was no hope for additional staff houses due to budgetary constraints.

“It is important to understand that the government is not obliged to provide accommodation to public officers and we need to reduce complaints and see to it that we share what is available,” Mr Kgabanyaneadvised.

Ms Rosalind Serumola, the Molepolole Sub-district principal education officer, bemoaned the fact that some officers after being transferred opted to occupy government houses leaving their own thereby increasing shortage of accommodation.

Mr John Motsumi MAA principal education secretary, said in order to reduce delay in supplying of gas, it would be convenient for the school head to facilitate provision of fire wood.

He challenged schools to understand that even though the council was aware of the fact that shortage of teaching aids may hamper learning processes there was little that could be done to arrest the situation as the funds required were too high than what has been provided. ENDS
