Masisi urges residents to harvest rain water

Moshupa-Manyana MP, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi, says due to recurring drought, Botswana has in recent years been experiencing water shortage.
Mr Masisi, also Vice President, was addressing a kgotla meeting at Ralekgetho in his constitueny on August 19.
He appealed to residents to preserve rain water to arrest the situation.
He said most of the boreholes had dried up due to unreliable rainfall.
In addition, the Vice Presaident said water scarcity was everywhere in Southern African countries adding government intended to recycle water for domestic consumption in future.
Mr Masisi was answering a concern from Kgosi Kgomotso Selotlego of Ralekgetho who complained about water shortage in his village.
Mr Masisi informed residents of Ralekgetho that government remained committed to addressing the high unemployment rates, especially among the youth.
He said it was crucial that citizen economic empowerment became one of government’s key priority areas.
Mr Masisi pointed out that among the strategies adopted to reverse the tide of unemployment, government was doing all in its power to encourage, promote and nurture the spirit of entrepreneurship among Batswana.
This, he said, was being done with the view to helping Batswana not only to feed themselves and their families, but also to play a significant role in job creation.
He stated that government would continue to work tirelessly towards ensuring a better life for every Motswana.
He also stated that the government spends a lot of money to purchase tablets, medicine, fuel, clothes, furniture and in road construction.
On other issues, Vice President commended residents for good behaviour in their village.
He said Ralekgetho residents used to be trouble makers, taking law into their hands.
He said they used to commit crimes such as murder, theft and illegal alcohol consumption.
He welcomed the improvement and encouraged them to keep up that sprit, adding that where there is peace and stability life goes well.
He said the government also needs a lot of money for development and told residents that the University of Botswana delayed admitting students due to lack of sponsorship.
He was concerned about illegal sand mining in some rivers in his constituency.
He said the culprits should be arrested and brought before the law.
However, residents praised the government for delivering good assistance programmes which has uplifted their livelihoods.
They applauded public servants in their area whom they said are dispensing programmes well in time and patience to them.
They said they were concerned about the time he was sick recently and wished him a speedy recovery when he was hospitalised in South Africa recently.
They said they prayed for him to become well again.
The VP donated 40 blankets to VDC, kgosi and a cow to be slaughtered on September 30 during independence celebrations. Ends
