Mozambican Ambassador to Botswana, Mr Dormingos Fernades paid a courtesy call to Lobatse Mayor’s office on August 16, to heighten the existing relations between Botswana and Mozambique.
Mr Fernades expressed the need to strengthen cooperation between the two countries during a meeting with Lobatse deputy Mayor, Mr Francis Mokwena where the former said the town has a rich history because it hosted many people including refugees and freedom fighters, among others.
He said Mozambique’s first President the late Mr Samora Machel was amongst the freedom fighters that sought refuge in the town and was hosted by the Kgaboesele family.
Mr Fernades said his role was to strengthen the relationship between the two countries especially in political, economic and social aspects that could bring investments to Lobatse and add value to the country’s economy.
He also said they have come to check with council leadership about the monument project progress since ground breaking has been done last year and still awaiting response for the construction of the building that is expected to cost P12 million
For his part, Mr Mokwena said Lobatse is a small town with a population of about 30 000 and just like any other towns; they are grappling with youth unemployment.
However, he said government is working round the clock to address unemployment issues by creating programmes that would assist the youth to improve their livelihoods through programmes like poverty eradication and Youth Development Fund (YDF).
He said youths were mentored to set up businesses that would help to close the unemployment gap. ENDS
