In an endeavor to augment the P200 000 per constituency pledged by government towards Botswana 50th anniversary festivities, the villages of Digawana, Gopong, Lorwana and Maruswa (Digoloma) held a one day soccer extravaganza in Digawana on August 13.
Digawana councilor and chairperson of Digoloma BOT50 committee, Daniel Motlhabankwe said in an interview that they had settled for football because of its popularity in the area. “We therefore invited some of the teams who ply their trade within the premier league not only to help our cause, but also to put on display the finest football Botswana can offer to many fans who for various reasons never get to interact with these players during the league,” he said.Thatwithstanding, Motlhabankwe expressed displeasure that one of the premier soccer league giants, Extension Gunners pulled out of the tournament at the last minute.
He however gave Jwaneng Galaxy a pat on the back for having honoured the charitable cause especially that it fielded two teams on the day.
“It is a clear indication of their absolute support towards our good cause and I should also commend all the teams who took part in this tournament,” he said.
For his part, Galaxy manager for development, Tirelo Tsimanyana said his team saw the gesture to participate in the one day soccer spectacle as a good opportunity to give back to society.
“Mind you, this is pre-season and tournament like these one provide a good platform to give players game time, especially players who do not always get to make first eleven a rare opportunity to show what they can do,” he said.
Two Jwaneng Galaxy youth development sides, Lorwana squad, Digawana squad, Lobatse Taxi Social Club as well as Digawana Breed took part in the day long football spectacle. ENDS
